Our first trip aboard Serenity.
Jeff stumbled upon a podcast featuring a former owner of our sailboat. He works at the Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle, WA and is dedicated to experiential maritime education. This is a most excellent interview with Tyson about his life and his work.
We both loved hearing more about his passion for all things education and boat-related. He’s a really inspirational guy.
There are times when we shake our fists in frustration at the decisions of former owners (not knowing who exactly we are shaking our fist at – I’m sure a future owner will do the same with respect to our decisions), but Tyson and his wife loved this boat and it was readily apparent when we met them for the first time. They lived on this boat for five years during graduate school and referred to the salon as the “dance floor.” Tyson built the solid, folding teak table that is our kitchen counter/dining room table/desk, among many other projects. It was nice to know that we were purchasing this boat from a couple who cared so deeply for her. I honestly think it was one of the major factors in our decision to buy Serenity.
You should listen to the podcast, it’s really great. Tyson will seriously make you want to drop everything and build a boat with a kid. You think I’m kidding.
